Phnom Penh joins MobiliseYourCity to foster the modernisation of its public transport system

Phnom Penh

The Capital City of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, transitions towards sustainable urban mobility. In February 2023, the city became MobiliseYourCity's latest member and is already turning its commitment into concrete action. With support from the Partnership, Phnom Penh aims to reduce the city's carbon footprint and improve the quality of life of its 2.3 million inhabitants by promoting more sustainable, low-carbon transport and modernising its public transport system.
Under the umbrella of MobiliseYourCity and with financial and technical support from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Phnom Penh Capital Administration (PPCA) seeks to establish an environmentally sustainable and inclusive transport system. Based on the existing strategies (i.e. the Phnom Penh Transport Master Plan 2035 and the Phnom Penh Sustainable City Plan 2018-2030), the city wants to develop and promote integrated public transport systems.

MobiliseYourCity will provide technical support to PPCA, financed through an AFD grant, to develop a strategic study to improve and modernise the public transport system, particularly the existing bus network.
On the path to sustainable urban mobility, the PPCA will play a central role in modernising the public transport network for the city and supporting the introduction of innovative solutions, such as dedicated bus lanes. With support from AFD and ADB, PPCA will engage in the transition of Phnom Penh towards just and green mobility. We hope this will encourage more Cambodian cities and other cities in Southeast Asia to join MobiliseYourCity and benefit from our Global Community of Practice and our resources on sustainable urban mobility planning.
