On 29 April, we will host an online event structured in three sessions exploring how African cities and stakeholders can advance the electrification of the paratransit sector, in collaboration with our partners C40 Cities and TUMI.

Paratransit is one of the most widely used modes of public transport in African cities, but it also contributes significantly to air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to the widespread use of old, often second-hand vehicles and their intensive daily operation. Electrifying this sector can help improve service quality while replacing old and unsafe vehicles, reducing air pollution and GHG emissions, and potentially enabling a shift towards higher-occupancy electric vehicles.

One event, three focused sessions

10:00-10:50 | Session 1 - Regional lessons on developing enabling policy and regulation to transition the paratransit sector to electric vehicles.
Drawing on lessons from the Nairobi study tour, this session will explore the policy and regulatory conditions needed to support an effective and inclusive transition to electric paratransit.

11:00-11:50 | Session 2 - Practical tools for policy makers, operators and investors in paratransit electrification.
This session will introduce a set of practical tools designed to support decision-making and implementation, including policy, regulatory, skills, feasibility, readiness, GHG modelling and total cost of ownership assessments.

12:00-12:50 | Session 3 - GHG emissions calculations for the paratransit sector in support of Climate Action Plans (CAPs) and NDCs
This session will build capacity among city, regional and national governments on how to calculate and account for paratransit emissions using the MobiliseYourCity GHG calculator tool, helping strengthen climate planning and emission reduction strategies.
