New momentum for sustainable mobility in the Dominican Republic

For several years, MobiliseYourCity has been supporting sustainable urban mobility dynamics in the Dominican Republic, alongside the institutional actors engaged in transforming the sector. In this context, Santo Domingo, a member city of the Partnership, holds an important place in this long-term work. Greater Santo Domingo already has a SUMP developed within the framework of the MobiliseYourCity Partnership, adopted in 2019, which helped establish a shared vision for more sustainable, better coordinated and more inclusive mobility.

In this context, CODATU also plays a recognised role in supporting sustainable mobility policies and projects, notably through technical assistance, training, and stakeholder dialogue. It is in this setting that the FIMUS programme now takes shape, building on the efforts already underway to implement the Greater Santo Domingo SUMP, following an initial phase of implementation support delivered through AIPMUS. Dedicated to strengthening institutions in the field of sustainable urban mobility, this programme supports ongoing efforts to better structure public action and assist the stakeholders involved.

In this context, Candice Lamour, a sustainable mobility specialist mobilised by CODATU, will support activities carried out in collaboration with INTRANT. Her arrival forms part of a framework already being rolled out, with Lloyd Wright, project director, recruited by Expertise France, already on the ground, while follow-up from CODATU headquarters is being led by Thomas Bafoil, CODATU’s new LATAM Project Manager. Her arrival will help support the programme’s initial operational steps and inform the discussions already underway with local partners.

For MobiliseYourCity, this development is fully part of a broader dynamic already underway in the Dominican Republic. The Partnership has already helped advance reflection on sustainable urban mobility planning in the country. This new phase, therefore, represents an opportunity to strengthen synergies, highlight ongoing experiences, and support knowledge sharing on key sustainable mobility issues.

MobiliseYourCity will also contribute to the exchanges accompanying the programme's rollout, notably through webinars and experience-sharing activities organised with CODATU. A launch webinar is in fact being considered, subject to confirmation, on Wednesday, 6 May at 3 p.m. These formats will help open discussions to a wider audience, bring different cities and institutions into dialogue, and inform the capacity-building actions planned under the programme.

The arrival of Candice Lamour and the gradual launch of FIMUS activities, therefore, mark a further step forward for cooperation in the Dominican Republic. For MobiliseYourCity, it is also an opportunity to continue its engagement in the country, alongside national and international partners, in support of more sustainable, more inclusive, and better-coordinated mobility systems.
